Holiday Pay

Holiday Pay For Benefits Eligible Employees

Non-exempt benefits eligible (50% or greater FTE or 20 hours or more per week) employees (except intermittent employees, student employees, and rehired retirees) will receive their regular pay (based on their regularly scheduled shift length) if they are scheduled to work on a recognized University holiday.  If the employee is not regularly scheduled to work on the holiday, the employee will not receive any pay for the holiday.

Please see the examples below:

  • A non-exempt full time employee who works 8 hours M-F, will receive 8 hours of pay for Memorial Day.

  • A non-exempt employee with a who is regularly scheduled to work 4 hours M-F, will receive 4 hours of pay for Memorial Day.

  • A non-exempt full time employee who regularly works 10 hours a day M-Th, will receive 10 hours of pay for Memorial Day, but the employee will not receive any pay for Good Friday/Spring Holiday.

  • A non-exempt full time employee who regularly works 10 hours a day T-F, will not receive any pay for Memorial Day, but the employee will receive 10 hours of pay for Good Friday/Spring Holiday.

Employees who must work on University Holidays (Applies to Non-Exempt Benefits Eligible Employees)

Some of our University departments/units commitments have employees with responsibilities that require them to work on days that the University is closed for scheduled University holidays (example – working athletic events, feeding animals, caring for after hour patients, etc.).  Working on these days is included as a part of these employees’ employment responsibilities.  These employees will be paid at a rate of one and one half times their regular rate of pay for their work on the holiday. Any hours worked during the holiday period over 40 hours per week are treated as overtime, and are paid at two times employees' regular rate of pay (see procedures for Overtime/Compensation Time Policy #60-311).  An employee who is scheduled to work on the holiday and cannot do so must take medical or personal leave for the total number of hours scheduled for the shift.

Please see the examples below:

  • A non-exempt full time employee who is regularly scheduled and required to work 8 hours on Memorial Day and does work that day, will receive 8 hours of pay at the rate of time and a half.

  • A non-exempt employee who is regularly scheduled and required to work 4 hours on Memorial Day and does work that day will receive 4 hours of pay for Memorial Day at the rate of time and a half.

  • A non-exempt full time employee who is regularly scheduled work and required to work 10 hours on Memorial Day and does work that day, will receive 10 hours of pay at the rate of time and a half.

  • A non-exempt full time employee who is regularly scheduled and required to work 8 hours on Memorial Day and does not work that day, will need to take 8 hours of leave (medical or personal) for not working on Memorial Day.

  • A non-exempt employee who is regularly scheduled and required to work 4 hours on Memorial Day and does not work that day, will need to take 4 hours of leave (medical or personal) for not working Memorial Day.
