Waiting on Social Security Number

Social Security numbers are used to report a person’s wages to the government and to determine a person’s eligibility for Social Security benefits. Employees working in the United States need a Social Security number to get a job, collect Social Security benefits, and receive some other government services. If you’re temporarily in the United States to work, your employer will ask for your Social Security number. In general, only noncitizens authorized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to work in the United States can get a Social Security number. For international employees, i.e. U.S. Citizenship status is noncitizen authorized to work, waiting for a social security number, please visit https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html.

Section 1 of the Form I-9 must be completed by the employee no later than their first day of work for pay. If the international employee, i.e. U.S. Citizenship status is noncitizen authorized to work, does not have a social security number (SSN), the employee should wait to complete the I-9 until they receive their social security card. Employee should not enter a temporary or alternative Social Security Number, leave blank until a permanent Social Security Number is received. This will result in a false Tentative Non-Confirmation case result for Employee Authorization.
