6-21-11 - Employment Contracts

TO: All MSU Employees

Subject: Employment Contracts

The IHL Board recently announced revisions to the manner in which annual employment contracts will be issued. Effective this year, the IHL Board will only issue contracts to University Presidents, the Commissioner, Vice Presidents, Provosts, Deans, Associate or Assistant Provosts and Vice Presidents that supervise Deans, and members of the teaching faculty (tenure-track faculty and instructors who teach). No other University employees may receive an IHL Contract unless specifically approved by the Commissioner.

In light of this revision, a number of MSU employees will not receive an employment contract this year despite receiving one in the past. For example, heads of separately budgeted units will no longer be under contract unless they are members of the teaching faculty. The removal from the contract list should not be interpreted as any reflection on the value of the position to the university or of the merit of the individual. In addition, this action is no reflection of an employee's job stability. The IHL Board has simply revised the procedures to add increased flexibility for each of the State's Institutions of Higher Learning.

If you are not included in the list above of those eligible for a contract, you will receive an annual employee letter in the near future which will contain your current title and your 2011 salary.

If you have any questions, please contact your unit head or Human Resources Management.

Sincerely,

Jerome A. Gilbert
Provost and Executive Vice President
